Montecristo was founded in 1935 and named after the Dumas novel that lectores read aloud to rollers in the Havana factories. It is the best selling Habano in the world, and the No. 4 alone accounts for a substantial share of all Cuban cigars sold. The house style is consistent rather than showy: a medium body built on cocoa, cedar and roasted coffee, with a tang that keeps it from turning sweet. The numbered Linea Clasica remains the core, joined by the Open line for lighter outdoor smoking, the Edmundo family in wider gauges, and machine-made Minis and Clubs.
