Nicaraguan cigars
Nicaragua grows the most talked-about tobacco outside Cuba, and has done since Cuban growers arrived after 1959. The volcanic soil around Esteli, Jalapa and Condega produces leaf with real power, and Nicaraguan cigars are generally fuller and sweeter than Dominican ones, with a pepper that Cuban cigars rarely show. Unlike Habanos, Nicaraguan cigars are frequently blended across countries, so an Ecuadorian or Mexican wrapper over Nicaraguan filler is normal rather than a compromise. Oliva, Plasencia, AJ Fernandez and Drew Estate all work here.
