1. The Early Years and the Journey to the Americas
Zino Davidoff was born in Kyiv in 1906. Following political unrest, his family emigrated to Geneva, Switzerland in 1911, opening a modest tobacco merchant shop (Boutique Davidoff).
In 1924, young Zino set sail for the Americas to study tobacco at its source. Over six years, he worked on plantations and in curing barns across Argentina, Brazil, and finally Cuba, where he mastered the chemistry of soil, seed hybridization, fermentation, and the art of the hand roller (Torcedor).
Upon returning to Geneva in 1930, Zino invented the world’s first climate-controlled desktop humidor, allowing European aficionados to store delicate Caribbean cigars without drying out.
2. The Cuban Golden Era (1946–1989)
Following World War II, Zino conceived the legendary Château Series (Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Haut-Brion), pairing fine wine terroir concepts with Cuban tobacco. In 1968, Cubatabaco partnered with Zino to roll the first official Davidoff No. 1, No. 2, and Ambassadrice at the historic El Laguito factory in Havana alongside Cohiba.
